| Breast Augmentation
Breast Augmentation is a procedure
where the breast is enlarged. Not one procedure is the same for
every patient. The choice of size is up to the individual, but
also dependant on each patient’s unique anatomy. Dr. Slatton
performs augmentation mammoplasty by inframammary incisions(in
the fold the breast makes with the chest wall) or periareolar
incisions( at the lower edge of the areola). The implants used
by Dr. Slatton are round, smooth saline implants, although other types of implants
may be considered, based on individual considerations. Overall,
smooth round saline filled implants, feel, look, and move better
than teardrop shaped saline implants. The sub pectoral pocket
(beneath the muscle) is preferred because of more natural
appearance, decrease in visible rippling, and lesser incidence
of capsular contracture. The inframammary incision is about 1
inch in length.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
When the nipple falls at or below the level
that the fold of the breast makes with the chest wall, a breast
lift may be required. This procedure is called a Mastopexy and
this can be done with or without implant placement. A mastopexy
changes the position of the nipple and areola in relation to the
breast mound. The incisions may be around the areola only (
Periareolar Mastopexy) or around the areola and from the 6 o’clock
position of the areola to the inframammary fold (Vertical
Mastopexy). There are few if any indications for the traditional
"anchor" incision in mastopexy procedures.
Breast augmentation is done as an outpatient
procedure. Patients can begin limited exercise in 2 weeks and
are generally activity restriction free by 6 weeks
postoperatively.
Final appearance takes about 3-6 months as
implants "drop" with the help of gravity, time, and
consistent post operative implant message. |
