Full Body Lift in Indianapolis, Indiana

Lower Body LiftWeight loss from diet and exercise or bariatric surgical procedures is a great accomplishment for many people who have struggled with obesity in their lives.  Many times, loose, hanging skin and unsightly wrinkles result as excess weight is lost. Plastic surgery techniques for addressing skin laxity of the abdomen, outer thighs, and buttocks regions have evolved significantly over the last 2 decades. In the 1990’s,  internationally known plastic surgeon and respected pioneer of body contouring surgery Dr. Ted Lockwood developed lower body lift procedures which are currently used at this time. The lower body lift is also known as:

  • Belt Lipectomy
  • Full Body Lift

The Lower body lift procedure is a combination of the High Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty and Transverse Thigh Buttock Lift (tummy tuck and butt lift) procedures. Often, this procedure is performed with liposuction to treat localized fat deposits. Tightening of the skin of the entire torso and outer thigh and buttock regions is accomplished in this operation. For the abdomen, loose skin above and below the belly button is tightened and stretch marks are removed and smoothened.  Plication (stitching together) of the abdominal muscle connective tissue layer (fascia) is usually performed in the same fashion as in High Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty. For the buttocks, the drooping fat and wrinkled skin are lifted and corrected. For the lateral (outer) thighs, the loose and wrinkled outer thigh skin is corrected by removing the skin and fat layer by surgical excision.  Often, deep fat deposits in the outer thigh region are liposuctioned to remove saddlebags and improve the overall result.

The excision of skin and underlying fat and resulting incision closure for this operation is circumferential (thus the term “belt lipectomy”).  The resulting incision scar is placed within the bikini or underwear line so that it can be well hidden.

The Superficial Fascial System (SFS) is a connective tissue lattice work that extends from the deep layer of the skin and extends to the flat layer of connective tissue (fascia) that covers the muscles of the body. The SFS is the strength layer that provides the scaffolding for closure of layers of skin and deep tissue in the body lift operation. As one can imagine, the closure must withstand great amounts of strain with normal body motion.  Therefore, permanent stitches are required to hold the deep tissue together. Meticulous closure of the Superficial Fascial System (SFS) and careful preoperative marking help create a well placed, acceptable and often thin scar. This operation requires that patients are in generally good health, have stabilized their weight, and understand the recovery process quite well. The lower body lift operation is usually the first in treating the skin laxity that results for massive weight loss patients. It creates a foundation for subsequent operations, specifically, the Inner Thigh lift

Good Candidates for Full body Lift Surgery -patients who have drooping outer thigh and buttock skin and deep tissue and loose abdominal skin as a result of major or massive weight loss are best candidates for this procedure. Patients should be in overall good health and not smoke and have any medical conditioned well controlled. Patients who are still morbidly obese (Body Mass Index>40, who smoke, or have uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease should have these issues addressed before undergoing Lower Body Lift surgery.

How to choose a body lift surgeon.  Dr. Slatton has two decades of experience in body contouring surgery for massive weight loss patients.

Before your body lift surgery, you should have any medical conditions addressed and controlled, stop smoking, if you smoke, at least 4 weeks prior to surgery.

Preparing-once your surgery is scheduled you should prepare arranging for appropriate time off from work, have child care arrangements made if applicable, and wash with antimicrobial soap for three nights in a row prior to the day of surgery. Drink plenty of fluids the day of surgery.

During the surgery, you will be under sedation or general anesthesia.  The surgery is performed in a hospital or AAAHC accredited surgery center.

Recovery from lower body lift surgery takes 2-3 weeks before returning to work.  You will be seen frequently in our office for post op care during this time period.  Return to light exercise is at 4 weeks, and complete unrestricted activity is by 3 months.

Your Results will take some time to become visible to you.  Many patients see immediate results and some see results evolve more slowly as swelling subsides.  A compression garment is often worn if liposuction is performed with the lower body lift for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

Cost of a lower body lift includes the surgeon’s, and facility fees. The cost increases commensurate with the total areas of liposuction performed at the same time as the lower body lift.

Financing for surgery can be obtained through several lenders.  Click here to go to our financing page

The benefits of lower body lift surgery are great.  Clothes fit better.  Many patients feel their journey from obesity to normal body weight is complete or on the way to completion after their surgery.

Complications are uncommon. During your consultation and pre operative visits, we will discuss these as they pertain to you and lower body lift surgery. The risks of this surgery are minimized by having the surgery performed in a hospital and being in overall good health before having the surgery.

Alternatives to Body Lift surgery are to not have the surgery and live with the loose skin and wrinkling that occurs after major or massive weight loss.
